Today was my friend’s birthday. He likes Pokemon, and one of his favorite Pokemon is Charizard. So, I bought him a Charizard EX box with some card packets and a giant foil Charizard EX card. I wrapped it up, and (since his favorite color combo is black and neon green) topped it off with a black and green duct tape bow. Since I sit with him everyday at lunch, I decided to give it to him then. He loved it, gave me huggles, then kept the bow (I kind of figured he would) and we went to lunch.

His girlfriend seemed mildly irked by the fact that I had given him a present for his birthday. After we finished eating, we were all checking out the present and looking at the cards, then my friend’s girlfriend just got pissed to the point of tears and left the cafeteria. All I could think to do was look at him and ask, “Did she seriously get mad because I gave you a birthday present?”

His response: “It’s just a jealousy thing.”

I am trying to see this from his girlfriend’s POV and still figure out why she was so jealous and angry. He and I had more than one fling, he cheated on her with me, and she hates me for it. I get that and do not by any means blame her for it. However, that was when he and she could not see each other outside of school (her dad didn’t like him, it is a long story). He wanted someone to cuddle with since he could not cuddle her, so he texted me. At first, he told me that he wanted someone who wouldn’t get too attached and it was JUST cuddling. Then he made the first move and kissed me. We fooled around some, then he and his girl could hang out again and he and I stopped seeing each other.

Since then–which was about two or three months ago–he and I have not hung out and have barely texted each other. We see each other in the halls every now and then, but he is a sophomore and I am a senior, so our schedules are on different ends of the hallway. By now, I figured his girlfriend would have realized that he and I are just friends. I have completely given up on the idea of dating him. I still think he is attractive and would be willing to fool around again, but only after he is single. It would be completely physical. This doesn’t make me shallow. It is just with him, not all guys. Any other guy and there would HAVE TO BE COMMITMENT.

I tried to see it from her POV and managed to understand why she doesn’t like me. However, I did not understand why she cried and left the cafeteria because I gave him a birthday present. She gave him at least five presents and they probably did it, but I give him some Pokemon cards and it’s suddenly this:

“YOU FUCKING BITCH! HOW DARE YOU GIVE MY BOYFRIEND A BIRTHDAY PRESENT!”

At least, that is what I heard in my head when she glared at me as she left the lunch room. All I could think at that moment was, “I gave him Pokemon cards. Not my virginity.”
