I really have to rant. It’s keeping me up. I mean to offend no-one. So working in retail, and I don’t know if it’s my experience in Leicester that might be bias, considering it’s multicultural circumstance, but 90% of those of Indian descent think they are an exception to the rules of social etiquette. Why do they think they can bring 10 items to the till and then say ‘oh I don’t want those 9 anymore’ and leave all their crap with me. Or ‘this one has been out on the shop floor;give me a discount’. They seem to buy 10 things and return 9. Some expect cash for their item returned with absolutely no proof of purpose. Some of the men are chauvinistic pigs and talk down to me, as if I don’t know what I am talking about when I say no to having a discount because it’s been on the mannequin. Then Indian women feel they have to ring their husbands to check if they’re allowed to buy something. I feel embarrassed for them. Some trash the rails right infront of me, and I hope it’s because of their unawareness rather than having no shame. ‘Do you have anymore of these’ ‘No, all our sale stock is out’ ‘can you check out the back please’ ‘there is nothing in there. It is ALL out on the shop floor.’ ‘But can you just check’ What do they not understand? Some are just down right rude. Dismissive. Impatient. ‘Where is my gift receipt?’ They didn’t ask for one. If I read this 1 year ago with no experience in retail, that somebody else had written, I would be disgusted. Obviously a lot of you will be. But only some will understand. On the other hand, there is the 10% that act like just the rest of us, considerate, understanding, and real. And of course there is white people that are just as rude. But the sad thing is, the company I work for has extremely high customer service expectations. And those 90% know it. Take advantage of it. So you just have to take all that crap and smile.
