So I found a petition online that says “Make All Shelters in the US Non-Kill Shelters” I read what the petitioner had to say on the issue. I came to the realization that not only was the end goal that that person wanted was impossible, but they were oblivious to the consequences that would occur because of this action. To basically sum it up, they wanted all shelters to be non-kill shelters, practically everyone in the United States of America to adopt a pet and literally force people to spay and neuter animals. Now, I believe that animals deserve a chance at life, however I believe that people deserve to decide if they want a pet or not and what they want to do with their money and with what they own. Now on to the consequences of this choice; to accommodate these animals you would have to build many many more shelters, so in turn, your taxes would go up drastically, the unemployment rate would soar, and crime would be at an all time high. I know that that they would hire a bunch of people to build and staff these shelters, but the majority of other people would get dicked over from this. I’m about to go into detail, so get ready.
1.) States would eventually run out of money so they’ll start shoveling out money that they don’t have to fund these shelters.
2.) Taxes would get so high that small businesses would get hit the worst. So basically, the mom-and-pop hardware store that has been family run since 1962, will cease to exist because the owners can’t afford to own a business anymore.
3.) All the workers from these now bankrupt businesses got their jobs cut and they’re out of a job. What is synonymous with unemployment? The crime rate. With all these unemployed workers that can’t find a job, they’re going to resort to crime to keep food on the table.
4.) Some cities don’t have room to build anymore shelters.
5.) Some cities can’t afford to build these shelters. (Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Detroit are shining examples)
6.) Funding for our police and military would have to get cut so they can fund these shelters, in turn, unemployment rises, crime rises, and our country gets weaker.
So now do you see my point that this is a horrible investment that someone could make? America would go from the global superpower that dominates global economics and military might, to collapsing like the USSR because it ran out of money. Just because stray animals get killed in shelters you don’t have to make a petition that would fuck up everyone’s lives without you realizing it.
